Beatles driver and friend, Alf Bicknell, talks about the boys with Iris at Abbey Road Studios
Alf Bicknell was one of the kindest gentlemen I've ever met, and that's why I'm sure The Beatles loved him as well. He was quite a charmer too. He was on the "inside" but kept their secrets, and was regarded as a friend. From 1964 to 1966, he was the Beatles' chauffeur, ferrying them to and from concert venues and movie sets. When the band traveled in John Lennon's Rolls Royce Phantom V, Bicknell was usually behind the wheel. He even inspired the song, "Baby You Can Drive My Car." Sadly Alf passed away on March 9th, 2004 at the age of 75. Here's the chat we had at Abbey Road Studios in September 1999.
